Plastics

Plastics are polymers — long chains of repeating chemical units. Thermoplastics: soften on heating, can be remolded (PVC, polythene) — recycled. Thermosetting plastics: once set, don't soften on heating (bakelite, melamine) — used in handles, electrical fittings. Properties: corrosion-resistant, lightweight, strong, poor conductor, non-biodegradable (problem!).
