Open topicIn 1973, in Uttarakhand, villagers (especially women led by Gaura Devi) hugged trees to prevent them from being cut by contractors. "Chipko" means to hug/stick. This non-violent protest saved thousands of trees and became famous worldwide as an environmental movement.
