The Story of Amrita

In 1973, in Uttarakhand, villagers (especially women led by Gaura Devi) hugged trees to prevent them from being cut by contractors. "Chipko" means to hug/stick. This non-violent protest saved thousands of trees and became famous worldwide as an environmental movement.

Trees: Release oxygen for breathing, Absorb carbon dioxide (reducing pollution), Provide shade and cool the environment, Prevent soil erosion, Give us fruits, wood, medicine, gum, Provide habitat for animals and birds, Control floods by absorbing water, Improve rainfall patterns.

Ways to protect trees: Plant new trees (Afforestation), Don't cut trees needlessly (Deforestation must be stopped), Celebrate Van Mahotsav (first week of July — tree planting festival), Use recycled paper (saves trees), Choose bamboo products over wood products. India's forest cover is about 21% — target is 33%.
