Vegetables

We can sort objects by their colour. Sort these vegetables: tomato (red), carrot (orange), spinach (green), brinjal (purple), potato (brown). Red group: tomatoes. Green group: spinach. Orange group: carrot. Sorting helps us organise and count more easily. How many green vegetables do you have?

Vegetables have different shapes: Round (tomato, potato), Long (carrot, radish), Leafy (spinach, cabbage). Sort your vegetables by shape. How many are round? How many are long? Sorting by one rule gives groups. We can then count and compare groups.

A picture graph uses pictures to show data. If you have 3 tomatoes, draw 3 tomato pictures in a row. If you have 5 carrots, draw 5 carrot pictures. Now you can compare: more carrots than tomatoes! Reading a graph: each picture = 1 (or any agreed number). The longer row has more. Picture graphs are the simplest type of data display.
