Motion and Measurement of Distances

Standard units of measurement, types of motion, measuring tools.

Key Topics

Need for Standard Units

Open topic

Non-standard units (hand span, foot) vary person to person โ†’ inconsistent. Standard units are fixed internationally. SI system (International System): metre (length), kilogram (mass), second (time), ampere (current), kelvin (temperature).

Types of Motion

Open topic

Rectilinear: straight line (train on track, falling object). Circular: moving in circle (clock hands, fan blades). Periodic/Oscillatory: back-and-forth motion repeating regularly (pendulum, swing, heartbeat). Rotational: spinning around own axis (Earth, top).

Measuring Length

Open topic

Ruler for short lengths. Measuring tape for curved surfaces. Metre rod for room dimensions. Use correct unit: mm for small objects, cm for medium, m for rooms, km for distances between cities. 1m = 100cm = 1000mm. 1km = 1000m.

Formulas

Unit Conversions
Formula detail
1 km = 1000 m = 100,000 cm = 10,00,000 mm
Your height 160cm = 1.6m = 0.0016km
1 hour = 60 minutes = 3600 seconds
2.5 hours = 150 minutes = 9000 seconds

Experiments

Measuring Curved Length
Objective: Measure the length of a curved line or object
Materials: String/thread, Ruler, Curved surface (ball, bottle)
Result: Curved length measured accurately โ€” shows why rulers alone aren't enough
