Formation of Fossil Fuels

Fossil fuels formed from remains of organisms buried millions of years ago. Coal: formed from ancient forests buried under water/mud, covered with more sediment, slowly converted to coal by heat and pressure (millions of years). Types: Peat → Lignite → Bituminous → Anthracite (increasing carbon content and heating value). Petroleum: formed from marine organisms buried in sea bed.
