Decimals extend our number system to represent parts of whole numbers. The decimal point separates whole part (left) from fractional part (right). Tenths: one digit right of decimal. Hundredths: two digits. Thousandths: three digits. 3.47 = 3 ones + 4 tenths + 7 hundredths = 3 + 4/10 + 7/100.
